The blaze broke out shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at a single-story home in the 8200 block of Gilroy Road in Nanjemoy, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Sandra Gilroy, the homeowner, was inside when the fire started in a bedroom, officials said.
During the 911 call a spokesperson said that a neighbor reported that "(her) house was full of flames and the elderly women was inside."
She managed to escape but suffered burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Gilroy was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for treatment.
Her injuries were described as non-life-threatening by investigators.
The Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, sending 57 firefighters who took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Officials said smoke alarms in the home were present and activated, which helped prevent further tragedy.
While the fire remains under investigation, authorities noted that it does not appear to be suspicious.
Crews estimated $250,000 in damages to the structure and $30,000 to its contents.
